Widget? What’s a widget?

The word “widget” is thrown around the internet a lot these days, so I thought it would be a good idea to explain what a widget is, especially since our polls are in fact widgets.

Widgets are commonplace and are used by bloggers, social network users and owners of personal web sites. Widgets are data files that can be embedded into a site’s HTML code and are typically displayed in a small viewing pane on the site. They are most often used to display customized or personalized content on a web site, such as to share photos or music recommendations.

Widgets add content and functionality to the web page and are usually created by a third party. Widgets are also known as modules, snippets, and plug-ins; they are usually written in HTML, but also in JavaScript, Flash and other scripting languages that will be run when the page is called.
