Points for 80+ word opinions awarded

As we have previously announced, we have listened to the many comments and suggestions from our members and have decided to make a change to Social Rewards, a change which would take into account opinions written by members (details will be announced when the change has been implemented).

In the meantime, we’ve decided to retroactively award points for opinions 80 words or longer, including opinions written after the launch of Social Rewards.

Enjoy your points!

Will members continue to be rewarded under the old scheme until an announcement is made? Or is this award going to continue. It does not make sense for an opinion site to not award points for opinions, but the popularity of opinions.

Whilst it is all fair and well having an opinion that is widely agreed with, you need an opposing opinion to continue the discussion – otherwise it becomes a very boring and uninteresting back slapping contest.

Could both sets of awards be used in conjunction with each other?

I’m really glad you’re doing that. The usefulness vote is not working for two reasons – one is as Shaziy says that a lot of people only put useful if they agree with your opinion. Another reason is that I’ve noticed one or two people getting 20-30 useful votes every time they write a line or two. I’m not sure how it’s happening, but there may be 20 very similar opinions on one page, each with 0-2 usefulness votes, and in the middle there will be a similar kind of opinion with 28 usefulness votes. So, in the meantime, I think that points for 80 word answers are more meaningful. I don’t think anyone wanted a popularity contest in the first place.

Toluna you really do need to rethink as almost all the great regulars have gone, just one or two remaining. 9thats if you actually want us back of course)I am in touch with several oldies who will return if some/all of the competitive /popularity elements now in play are removed

This new policy could mean that members who would have a view on polls with less than 80 words, may skip them until they find one which requires an answer of 80 words or more. A great deal of intelligent input could be lost. Sometimes a short written answer speaks more volume than a ‘padded’ answer and encourages more participants. Bare in mind that a lot of people have limited time to spend on Toluna and other similar sites and, as a result, log off before they’ve submitted an opinion. It seems a strange decision and makes one think there is a hidden Agenda. I’ll continue to participate, albeit more selectively, and appraise after a couple of months.
