Do National Anthems capture current mentality? – The UK Does It Better Competition
National Anthems are meant to allude to historical moments of both struggle and glory, and to traditions. However, some were written centuries ago and were never updated to include more recent events.
For instance, the Dutch National Anthem, written while the Netherlands fought to become independent from the Spanish Empire, still compare the Spanish crown to a tyrant. Surely Spain wouldn’t mind being taken from this narrative 🙂
Let`s remember the UK’s National Anthem:
God save our gracious Queen!
Long live our noble Queen!
God save the Queen!
Send her victorious,
Happy and glorious,
Long to reign over us,
God save the Queen.
With this in mind, our first mission to you is: Re-write the national anthem in a way that you believe will fit your countries current personality and mentality. Are you up to the challenge?
To participate in this mission, please follow this simple rules:
♣ CREATE your own TOPIC and add the letters « DIB » in front of the title (e.g.: DIB – My National Anthem)
